Routine
Vet visit travel routine for dogs
A calm, predictable pre-vet routine that turns stressful clinic visits into manageable ones — without sedation.
Vet visits combine two of the hardest things for many dogs: a car ride and an unfamiliar environment. Without a routine, both stack — and you arrive with a panicked, drooling dog before the appointment even starts.
A repeatable pre-vet routine fixes most of it. Here's the one we recommend.
The night before
- Light dinner 3+ hours before bedtime
- Normal bedtime — don't change routine
- Lay out the harness, leash, and any carrier so cues are visible in the morning
Morning of the visit
- Light breakfast or skip if appointment is within 2 hours
- 10-minute walk to release energy
- Avoid high-pitched reassurance — keep tone neutral
30 minutes before departure — the protocol
Run the full NausX 30-Minute Travel Protocol:
- Give NausX Dog Travel Support
- Cool the cabin to 65–72°F
- Forward-facing harness
- Smooth, slow drive
At the clinic
- If possible, wait in the car until called — fewer waiting-room triggers
- Bring a familiar blanket or toy
- Use the same calm tone you used at home
- Reward calm behavior during exam, not anxious behavior
The drive home
Many dogs experience a stress crash after vet visits — drooling, panting, or restlessness. Same protocol applies: cool cabin, cracked windows, smooth driving. Pull over within 15 minutes if you see early signs of motion sickness.
After the visit
- 30 minutes of decompression at home before food
- Offer water freely
- Quiet environment for the rest of the day
- For sensitive stomachs, run the after-travel gut reset
Predictability is the active ingredient. The same routine, every visit, lowers stress more than any single product can.
A calm vet visit starts in your kitchen, not the clinic parking lot. Build the routine around the Travel Health System and most dogs settle by the third visit.
